Winning Strategies for Applications to Global B-schools Programs

Step one:Know yourself

Why do you need an MBA?

Both the MBA application process and the completion of the MBA degree program can be lengthy,
arduous experiences that involve a significant mental, emotional and financial investment. To help you decide if you are ready to undertake this step in your career, you should think carefully about WHO YOU ARE and where you are going. As you think about these things, you will begin to form what we term as a "knowledge pyramid." If your ideas about your past, present and future are well thought-out,  your  knowledge  pyramid  will  look  like  the  one below.  In  this  case,  you  are  well prepared to begin your applications.

If you have a complete knowledge pyramid, you can easily answer the three questions below :

  1. Do you know how your past is a foundation for your future?

  2. Do you know what you want to achieve professionally?

  3. Do you know how an MBA will complete your preparation for your professional future?

A well developed Knowledge Pyramid illustrates the following about you:

  • You know a lot about your past because you have thought over your experiences. You can easily answer questions about significant events in your past that have made you who you  are today.  You  can explain  how  your  past  has  prepared  you  to  pursue your  future goals. And you can speak eloquently about your present situation

  • You have developed plans and goals for your professional future. You not only have a
general  mission  in  life,  but  also  have  some  specific  ideas  about  what  you  want  to  be doing in your future career. You have also thought about the impact you want to make on the world.

  • Your ideas are connected, and each step in your future will prepare you for the next one.
You know exactly why an MBA is the best degree to prepare you for your professional future and why now is the best time to get it. You also know which MBA program and which Business schools best suit your needs and you are ready to tell them why.

Know your future

If your  ideas about your  future  are  unclear, as shown  in  the  pyramid  below, you  need  to  do some
serious thinking about your future before starting your applications.

  1. The main thing you need to develop is a futurevision. What do you want to be doing in your future career? Will you stay in the same company or even the same career field? If not, what will you do?
  2. These are tough questions, but you need to form basic answers to them in order to get into an MBA program.  Don't  worry  -  you  are  not  obligated  to  follow  through  on  these  exact  plans.  You  are, however,  expected  to  have  well  thought-out  plans  and  reasonable-sounding  goals.  These  qualities will help convince the admissions committee that you are a success-oriented person.

  3. Begin by reading the questions on the next page and writing down some possible answers. But don't feel satisfied with your current answers - good answers need time to develop, so keep thinking about these questions and write down ideas whenever they come to you.
